Food and Film

The cravings that come with food from the big screen

Be honest. How many times have you sat down watching a film and thought, “I wish I was eating that right now!”

Personally, there are certain films that just make me hungry:

1. Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain: The way Amélie cracks the crust of a Crème Brulée with a spoon… mouthwatering!

2. Catwoman: I know, not a great film when it comes to storyline or acting maybe, but when I see Halle Berry perched on her bed snacking on a can of tuna and eating the raw fish right off the nigiri, it makes me crave doing the same… many an evening have I snuck downstairs into the pantry and snatched myself a can to consume while I watch… yet it never seems to taste as good as it looks… :S

Lord knows how she can eat that many! (picture: Warner Bros.)

I found a blogpost on food in Pulp Fiction the other day, and someone has actually taken the time to put together a menu with all the delicious foods and drinks as seen in the film. I don’t want to be a copycat and repeat the great words written there, I agree with “T J Barrack” in his view that there is something special about the way Quentin Tarrantino displays food!

Similarly, there is a whole blog called The Inn at the Crossroads dedicated to reproducing food as described in the Song of Ice and Fire book series, lately adapted into the TV series Game of Thrones. Mostly medieval-inspired foods, the site also features cakes with motives from the books and TV series. Check out their gorgeous Weirwood cake!

I hope you have enjoyed this little journey through food in films. These were but a few examples. Please feel free to suggest more by commenting, I’m very interested to know what your favourite film-food is! 🙂
